Explaining the recent cold spell, Dr Mohammed Al Abri, Director of the Meteorology Department at NCM, told Khaleej Times on Monday that it was driven by weather systems moving in from the northwest.
“This is due to an extension of a low-pressure trough passing from the northwest,” he said, adding that “the UAE was influenced by the lower part of this low-pressure system, making its impact on weather relatively weak.”
He noted that cold air associated with the Siberian high followed, “bringing pleasant cold weather across the UAE.”
Notably, Dubai residents witnessed mild to moderate showers in various parts of the emirate on Monday.
Now, that system has moved on. “The low-pressure system has now passed the country, and we are currently under the influence of high pressure,” Dr Al Abri said, explaining that winds are expected to be light to moderate, with low cloud formation in some areas.
Conditions remained comfortable, with temperatures not exceeding 26ºC throughout the country.
“There is no rainfall expected in the next few days,” he added, though winter conditions mean rain chances remain “normal for this time of year.”
Fog, mist and a mild warm-up
For the next two days, residents — especially in coastal and inland areas — may wake up to mist or fog, particularly in the early mornings. Tuesday will be partly cloudy, with more low cloud cover over eastern and northern parts of the country.
On Wednesday, temperatures are expected to rise slightly by two to four degrees Celsius, offering some relief from the recent chill. But the warmth will be short-lived.
“And we expect a drop in temperature on Friday,” Dr Al Abri added.
Rain chances return by Thursday
By Thursday, weather patterns may shift again, with some parts of the country likely to see light rainfall. “On Thursday, there is a probability of light rain over the northern areas, such as Sharjah and beyond,” he said.
The wet spell may extend into Friday, particularly across northern and eastern regions, including Fujairah. “From Thursday into Friday, there is a chance of light rainfall,” Dr Al Abri said, warning that winds could pick up, reaching up to 40 kmph at times and leading to higher sea waves in the Arabian Gulf.
